Discussion on options for #1322

Current list (6.2 Beta 18th July 2011)

  • 8 Top + Bottom (Portrait)
  • 8 Bottom (Portrait)
  • 8 Bottom + Vario (Portrait)
  • 8 Top (Portrait)
  • 8 Left + Right (Landscape)
  • 8 Left (Landscape)
  • 8 Right (Landscape)
  • 9 Right + Vario (Landscape)
  • 9 Left + Right (Landscape)
  • 5 Right (Square)
  • 12 Right (Landscape)
  • 12 Bottom (Portrait)
  • 12 Top (Portrait)
  • 24 Right (Landscape)

14 entries

Two reasons to look at simplifying this list:

  • The list is quite long. And could get longer
  • There are many options which are really pairs. E.g. Matching Landscape vs Portrait versions. This should be more obvious to the user.

3 fields

NOTE: Left=Top, Right=Bottom for Portrait. T=Top,B=Bottom,L=Left,R=Right

Three methods to get user input:

  • Separate fields: Number, Split, Vario
  • One big list: Named as it currently is but group Portrait/Landscape?
  • Two fields: Scheme (split, not split, vario); Number

Simple two options

Here is a way to have 4 options & 3 options - keeping it fairly simple and understandable.

  • 8
  • 8/9 + Vario
  • 12
  • 24

Options:

  • Left (Landscape)/Top (Portrait)
  • Right (Landscape)/Bottom (Portrait)
  • Split (Left,Right Landscape / Top,Bottom Portrait)

Special cases, such as SQUARE layout will only allow 5 anyway, so no point in providing it as an option.

This split into a nice split for the future too: Info Box & Features; Layout

The all in one approach

Another way to look at this is to consider just layout.... which works nicely for a fixed layout (e.g. without rotation) but how do you easily represent a move.
