Installing from Windows
Installing from a Microsoft Windows system with ActiveSync installed.
Download
Download the latest Windows EXE Installer from SourceForge (choose the correct version for the target organiser, or get the 'ALL' package if unsure.)
Connect
Connect the organiser to Windows via ActiveSync. Usually a connection is made automatically when the organiser is placed in a cradle or connected via a data cable.
Backup
Prior to performing any installation it is a good idea to backup the organiser for extra safety. (Backup from Windows ActiveSync or other proprietary method, eg 'iPAQ Backup').
Execute
Run the XCSoar installation EXE. This will be called something like "Install-XCSoar-nnn.exe" - where nnn contains version number and target organiser type. To run, double click on the downloaded EXE on the desktop.
Licence Agreement
Read and accept the License Agreement.
Follow Prompts
Follow the prompts for installation. The installer advises that there may be further instructions on the organiser. All further steps take place on the organiser.
Completing the installation
Erroneous Warning
On Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and Windows Mobile 5, the organiser may warn that 'This software was designed for an earlier version of Windows and may not display correctly'. This prompt can be safely ignored.
Reset
Soft reset (see operating instructions) the organiser to enable installed fonts and the Today screen launcher. This is an optional step. After restart the "FLY" (for full GPS version) and "SIM" (for XCSoar Simulator mode) launcher icons will be visible on the Today screen of the organiser.
- Resetting the organiser before every use of XCSoar (and other demanding applications) is a good practice, as it frees up as much memory as possible.
Start in Simulator mode
Choose Simulator from the Today screen.
