The Unofficial XCSoar Manual
Hardware
From XCSoar
PC or Laptop
The PC is used for XCSoar installation only and is useful for configuration, waypoint planning etc. Standard install uses Windows running ActiveSync. It is also possible to install XCSoar with Linux, Mac OS X, from Flash card or directly from the internet. See Install for further information.
Pocket PC
Windows Mobile 5, Microsoft Windows CE Version 4.0, Microsoft Windows CE Version 3.0 or later (PocketPC), MIPS and ARM processors. Devices with Symbian, Palm OS or Linux operating systems are not currently supported.
A variety of terms may be used to describe Pocket PC devices, including 'organiser' and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). Throughout this document, these terms are used interchangeably.
GPS data source
NMEA data source with $GPRMC and $GPGGA strings. Suitable devices include handheld serial GPS devices, glider flight loggers, bluetooth GPS devices, GPS-integrated variometers, and FLARM devices. Some PDAs have integrated GPS receivers.
One of the powerful advantages of XCSoar being open source is the ability to support a large amount of hardware. This section describes the use of XCSoar on particular Pocket PC devices and its integration with external devices and instruments. Due to the large number of devices available, it is not practical to include a discussion relating to every available device.
