What can I do if XCSoar fails during startup?

Failures during startup are mostly due to data problems, especially an inability to read the Airfields or other data files. Most issues are automatically bypassed or reported as errors, but sometimes a corrupt or invalid file may cause XCSoar startup to fail.

When that happens there is a couple of solutions:

  • Rename or remove the offending file (if you know what it is) from the system using the File Manager (either locally or via ActiveSync).
  • Load an empty ".prf" or profile file - create an empty file (using notepad or any other editor) and call it "empty.prf". Put it into the XCSoarData directory and select "empty" from the profile selector at startup. This should return all values to defaults.

When installing new files (eg updated turnpoints and airspace) it's always wise to change one file at a time, so that the cause of any problems can easily be identified!

When reporting a bug due to failure of XCSoar to start, please send also the file xcsoar-startup.log that is generated by the program. This file can help us to determine the cause of the failure.
